Team Building is essential for companies for motivate their staff. Companies also sent their employees on mandatory Team Building Events to break racial and cultural barriers so that the company can perform better as one working orgasm. Team Building Events are also used to train staff think out the box and come up with creative ideas, and solve problems. Team Building Events are usually done once a year, but we have also done three or four events for the same company a year. It could also be that a department has won a prize to go on an Amazing Race at a Six Flags Amusement Park. Team Building events should include parking, entrance, arrival coffee and muffins, bottled water, 11h00 refreshments, lunch and soft drinks, and all team building activities. I also include dietary requirements in my team building quotes, such as Vegetarian, Vegan, Halal, and Kosher Meals. However, I don't include Banting as a dietary requirement, but instead usually book a buffet restaurant for lunch.

Teams usually have to complete a task, but I never tell them what to do, because the team "create" their own games. For example, in our Amazing Race Team Building, the teams have to take selfies with abstract background - that do not exist. Abstract background could be topics like "Respect", "Fun", "On time for work", and even symbolic attractions like  "The Statue of Liberty".

Popular Team Building Venues usually include Theme Parks, Amusement Parks, Casino's and Entertainment Centers, or you can book a Conference or Wedding Venue if your client fancy some privacy - perhaps also if they first want to have a conference before the fun day. Team Building Venues are usually subject to that the venue does all the catering - this can be very costly! I avoid renting team building venues, and prefer to host my team building at Theme and Amusements Parks.

So, you need to arrange a team building event, and you don't know where to start. First, you need to find a team building venue, and get quotes for the date and number of people. The venues are usually build to a theme, and you can design your Amazing Race to fit that theme. For example, Amazing Race Italy, or Amazing Race Greece, or Amazing Race Amazon etc. The local restaurants will be more that keen to accommodate your group. You can select three restaurants – one for arrival coffee and pastries, one for the 11h00 refreshments, and the last one for lunch. Coffee shops are ideal venues for arrival coffee and pastries. The Food Court is a popular venues for your 11h00 pizza slices and a soft drink. Buffet Restaurants are very popular venues for lunch and soft drinks. I also market these team building events with “Three Restaurants”.

3rd Hire a Team Building Venue

Example could be to host your event at conference venues, or wedding venues. These venues are usually the most expensive, but also promise exclusivity of the venue for the day. You only need to book the venue from the morning, until after lunch – you might get discount if you don’t use the venue in the evening. The onus would be on the venue to have the Health and Safety File, and Public Liability Insurance in place.

09h00 - Arrival Coffee, Muffins, and Assorted Pastries

Start your event with a 20 minute Welcome Coffee and Pastries. Also have the Team Building Itinerary printed and visible - you want everybody to get exited about the day.

09h15 - Ice Breakers and Fun Group Activities

Start your event as one group, and finish the event as one group. You can finish the day by showing a video or photo slide day after lunch - usually hilarious to watch. The entire group stands in a circle, and are challenged with fun group activities. For example, everybody needs to grab a partner. Then you call that every with Green Shirts, have to find another partner with a Green Shirt - lots of fun!

09h30 - Dividing Teams

Divide the group into teams of about ten people per team. Everybody in the circle get a number. Then all the "1's" are in a team, all the "2's" in another team, and all the "3's" in another team, etc.

10h00 - Amazing Race Team Building

Each team will get an Amazing Race Card (printed on an A3). The card is divided into 3 challenges. First the have to complete a short detour, then the main activity, and finally end with a challenge. or in other words, the event should have an Intro, Body, and Conclusion. For example, start with a Letter Game (intro), as soon as the team is done, the get a head start, and finish with another Thinking Game, i.e. Nail Activity. 

11h00 - Refreshment Break with Bottled Water and a Snack

Each team get an iPhone, and all the iPhones are connected to the same cloud. Teams have to use their iPhones to find Jason Bourne. Jason Bourne will be a valenteer that also have an iPhone, and he will get a 3 minute head start to hide. Now, everybody plays tag, when Jason Bourne is caught, the next person will get a change to be Jason Bourne.

12h00 - Amazing Race Escape Room

This event is based on Angels and Demons. Teams have to solve riddles and find the four elements - earth, water, fire, and wind. Each element represents a number to open a safe, and save the world. Write clues with invisible ink, and give each team a UV torch.

13h00 - Lunch and Soft Drinks

Buffets and ordering the menu are old news. I have learned that a Greek Meze Lunch works very well. All the dishes are served in individual bowls - all the chicken strips in one bowl, all the tomato in one bowl, and all the whatever in another bowl. These bowls are passed around the table - a table buffet. People help themselves, and the bowls are passed around the table. Assorted soft drink are also placed in the middle of the table on arrival. After the lunch, the table will be scattered with many bowls, giving the feel of a real feast.

Ice Breakers and Fun Group Activities

Ice Breakers include “People to People”, “38”, “Ching Cho Cha”, etc. Laughter is guaranteed in 30 seconds. People to People is probably the most popular Ice Breaker. Everybody needs a partner, and the two must do, and repeat what you say. For example, "Hand together", "Feet together", but when you shout "People to people", they have to run past you and find themselves a new partner.

Newspaper Convener Belt

Teams have to cross a ten meter stretch by walking inside a newspaper conveyor belt. But first they have to build the conveyor belt using stacks of newspapers, and sellotape. The conveyor belt needs to be strong enough to last a ten meter race. No feet are allowed to touch the grass! This event can be anything from 15 minutes to 30 minutes. Teams learn to use minimum resources to achieve a goal. The best part of this event is the celebration when the first team crosses the line - keep your camera ready.

Amazing Race "Find My iPhone", find Jason Bourne

This is a Cat and Mouse strategy game. Each team get an iPhone, and by using the Find my iPhone App, teams then have to find Jason Bourne somewhere in Monte Casino. Each team volunteer a Jason Bourne, when they are tagged, the next person get a change to be Jason Bourne. The team with the most "Jason Bourne's" wins the most points. This is a Cat and Mouse strategy game. The people who cant partake for whatever reason, can watch the game on the big screen - you would need a TV or data projector. I just love to watch the game on the big screen.

Green Screen Movie Making

Teams act in front of a Green Screen for 12 seconds, and without knowing why. The video is then edited in the Amazing Race TV Show, with backgrounds such as the Eifel Tower, Great Pyramids, Great Wall of China, Donald Trump, etc - simply hilarious. This video is shown after lunch.The videos are shot and edited using an iPad with LumaFusion App. You can edit the video in about 30 minutes, but the best part should be shooting the video - it should be a well versed show.

Amazing Race Escape Room

Based on the Hollywood blockbuster with Tom Hanks, and Dan Brown's best-selling novel that took place in Rome (low physical requirements). Teams have to solve four puzzles - earth, water, fire, and wind. Each element represents a number to open a safe - and save the world! Riddles include invisible ink and UV Torches. After the teams have the four digits to open the safe, they must then find the correct order of the digits to unlock the digital safe. I like to host this event at shopping malls, amusement parks, water parks, and event at casinos - you need to get permission, but venues are usually just happy if your group eat at one of the restaurants.

MasterChef Team Building

Each team receives a Mystery Box with Herbs, Spices, Utensils, Charcoal and Braais. Teams take the BBQ Stands home after the event. One team will get the tomatoes and pepper, while the other team the onions and salt etc. Teams have to build a meat platter that represents a country, i.e. Mexico, Thailand, Spain etc. Use disposable utensils, people don't want to use secondhand or used cutting boards etc. Teams learn to swap, trade, and share with other teams to achieve a common goal. For lunch, everybody eat from all the tables.
